Project summary
Many children with brain-based developmental disorders, specifically those with severe neurological impairments, experience ongoing pain and irritability of unknown origin (PIUO) which is difficult to treat and these children typically cannot tell us ‘where it hurts.’ The Pain Pathway is a clinical pathway that was developed by the team to manage PIUO for children with severe neurological impairments. In Phase 1, we tested the usefulness of the Pain Pathway with families and expert clinicians in pediatric hospitals across Canada. In Phase 2, we are studying whether this tool can be used in a community context by general pediatricians. Our goal is to create a systematic, cohesive approach to enhance the clinical care for all children with complex medical needs experiencing PIUO.
Research theme: BRIGHT Realities – Projects to effectively bring interventions into the lives of children and their families
Audience: Children with severe neurological impairments (SNI) experiencing PIUO and their families.
Phase 1 study: Optimizing the Management of Pain and Irritability in Children with Severe Neurological Impairment (PIUO)
