Project summary:
Children with disabilities may feel particularly isolated in the winter, especially given current COVID-19 restrictions. The MEGA-Mess Activity e-book is intended to get children with disabilities moving. The e-book will feature biographies of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy who participated in the SPORT trial as well as their favourite recipe, scientific experiment, and craft. Via MEGA-Mess, activities adapted for children with physical disabilities will get them using their hands and encourage families to connect with others, sharing their inspiring stories and perspectives from SPORT. Given that the ebook will be available online, dissemination potential is extensive.

Funding amount granted:
$3,200

Project summary:
We proposed this webinar to showcase a unique set of strategies to tackle obstacles our CHILD-BRIGHT READYorNot™ Brain-Based Disabilities (BBD) Trial is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the webinar, we co-presented with our Patient and Family Advisory Council partners to describe the work we are doing to adapt our approach to recruitment, training and support materials, consent and assent, and study visits. This webinar facilitated crosstalk between projects and was timely to increase engagement and enthusiasm among community partners at a time when many of our sites are starting up recruitment.

Parent Advisors will also be invited to contribute.

Funding amount granted:
$4122.75

Project summary:
Children with brain-based developmental disabilities often face emotional and behavioural difficulties. These challenges can negatively impact their quality of life and the quality of life of their families. Our Strongest Families(TM) project explores whether emotional and behavioural regulation can be improved in children with neurodisabilities through parenting programs that include education, telephone support, parent-to-parent connections, and resource information. The ConneKT funds will be used to produce an op-ed with the intent of raising awareness of the challenges faced by many children who have the dual diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disabilities and mental health concerns. The team will also produce two short videos describing the Strongest Families Neurodevelopmental program and study to help inform the public about the work that is being done by the research team.

Project:
Diagnosis Using Integrated Metabolomics And Genomics In Neurodevelopment (IMAGINE)

Leads

Funding amount granted:
$5,000

Project summary:
Families express feeling abandoned and lost after receiving genomic sequencing results. To address this gap in care, three parent-partners worked with us to develop a customizable e-booklet. This illustrated resource describes genomic results in simple but accurate terms, and provides next steps and support, specific to each family. Having all relevant information in one place helps parents to “quarterback” their healthcare. But this approach is fundamentally inequitable: English-speaking parents benefit, but other language-speakers cannot access it. ConneKT funds will enable us to translate and evaluate this resource in two non-English languages. This pilot project has the ultimate goal of creating multiple versions for wider usage and e-support.
